So recently I attended my first anime convention seeing as Anime Boston takes place only a 10-15 minute walk from my college’s campus (lucky me). I only went for the saturday as I didn’t really feel like going from work and the main events I wanted to see were happening on Saturday anyway. But as much fun as it sounds to go to an anime convention this wasn’t the best way to be introduced to anime conventions. One word: lines. Now here’s my experience at Anime Boston.
So I wake myself up at 9:30 that Saturday morning cause I wanted to leave around 10 and get there relatively early. The main event I was going to see was the live concert by the pillows, one of my favorite bands, but I was gonna check out all the various panels they had as well. The concert was set to take place at 3pm so getting there a little after 10 I had figured I would have plenty of time to register and check out some panels and the dealer’s room before hand. As I’m walking to the Hynes Convention Center through Prudential I’m already getting into the feeling and mindset of the convention as I walk by cosplayers heading in the same direction. I made my way towards the registration area and noticed quite a long line. It didn’t look quite bad from where I was, but the hallway was deceptively long. Then I get to the end of the hallway and find out that isn’t even half of the line. The line spread out into a large warehouse like area and weaved back and forth a good 10 times. So I get in the back of the line cause there wasn’t much else I could do thinking the worse it could be is a 2 hour wait, maybe 2:30. I bust out my DS with Advanced Wars to take up some time only to find out that I had forgotten to charge my DS so it was already on red. I was able to get 2 full campaign missions in before it died, but that was far from the amount of time it took to get out of the line. The rest of the time all I could do was wait and look at the cosplayers waiting in line. Wasn’t much else to do since I was alone. Well after 2 hours of waiting I was still a good hour away from even getting out of the warehouse area I mentioned. It ended up taking a full 5 hours to register. All the time I was in behind this one group of people who, for the most part, weren’t bad and I actually had a nice chat with the dad when his kids and their friends ran to grab some food to bring back. The annoyance was one of his sons who was cosplaying as an akatsuki member. He just got more and more annoying as time went by cause he would run up to any other akatsuki cosplayer, of which I realized is a very over-cosplayed set of characters. I wanted to slap him multiple times, but refrained for obvious reasons. Then after about 3 hours of waiting in line this little girl came out of nowhere and joined the group in front of me. I don’t think she actually knew them, but just used her cuteness to sneak in line. Have to give her props for that at least. The problem with her was she would try to hug almost every single cosplayer that walked by. It would be like a sneak attack pounce and it got extremely annoying being behind them for 2 hours. But even the 5 hours I waited in the regular registration line was not as bad as Friday. I heard that the pre-registration line was 5 hours long while the registration line was 8-10 hours long. Needless to say many people were angry at their inefficiency. When I got to the front to register they had 5 computers running for people to enter their info in and only 2 people to take money and hand out badges. Not a speedy way to get things done.
But as I said before the best way to really kill time in line was to check out all the cosplayers and there were quite a fe that were pretty good and I realized how over-cosplayed some are, mainly Naruto, Bleach, and Death Note. I guess that’s to be expected though. At that point it became only the more obscure/less popular cosplays that caught my eye or the really good ones if they were popular. Ex. I saw what I thought was the best Soi Fan cosplay. She had her hair done perfectly with the sword hanging horizontally on her back. It was just about perfect. Then with her was probably the only Dragonaut cosplayer at the entire convention since he was cosplaying as Howling Star. Some other good, rarer cosplays I saw were a group of 3 girls and a guy dressed as the characters from Air. There was a Haruko and Naota pair. Legato from Trigun. I believe Nemu from Haibane Renmei, but I can’t exactly remember all the character names so it could have been another character. I also found it surprising by the number of Vampire Knight cosplays I saw, namely Yuki. I didn’t think I would see that many. Kinda disappointed I didn’t see many Fate/Stay Night cosplays. I saw 2 Archers, 1 Rin, and then only 1 Saber, and I didn’t even see the Saber at the convention. I saw her sitting at a Starbucks outside the convention. One of the best I saw though was a pair dressed as Aerith and Tifa of FFVII fame. Not necessarily because of the quality of the cosplay, which was very good though, but because their bodies. In simple terms, I wanted to plow them. Especially the girl dressed as Tifa since she had an amazing body and Tifa’s clothes don’t really cover much thankfully.
Well that was more than the first half of my entire Anime Boston experience. I hate lines. By the time I got registered it was 3:30, but luckily the concert started 30 minutes late for whatever reason so I was able to make it just in time. I then had to sit through the hour long performance of Luv & Response. They were pretty bad as they were pretty much a japanese N’Sync with 2 guys replaced by hot asian chicks. So it was just them dancing and singing most of the songs. Not actual music played by them. That type of thing just isn’t interesting to me and especially not the type of music. After an hour of that it finally came time for the pillows. To put it simply it was awesome. I unfortunately had to sit up in the mezzanine and more on the side, but it was still fantastic and I loved it all. They played songs from their newest full album, Wake Up! Wake Up! Wake Up!, and songs from FLCL as well as one new song. When that ended I made sure to get in line quickly so I could buy myself a t-shirt and also their cd to help support a favorite band. The best part of Anime Boston by leaps and bounds.
From there I thought I’d try just checking out some panels and the dealer’s room for the rest of the day before I leave. First I went to the dealer’s room so I could browse and buy. I had made sure to bring plenty of cash just for this. Unfortunately by the time I got there it was a bit past 5:50, at which point I was informed they would be closing at 6. Fuck. I had no time at all and the only things I could manage to buy were volumes 14-16 of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle. Didn’t get any good time to browse through and see what gems I could find. Was very disappointed by all that.
When I came out of that there weren’t any panels going on until 7 that I really had any interest in going to see. So I decided to just check out some of the video rooms. They show different animes at all times during the convention pretty much. First I check out the room where Samurai 7 was playing and watched the first episode of that. From there I went to check out Last Exile. I had heard it was good so I figured this was a good time to try it out. I ended up watching the first 2 episodes of that which ended at about 7:20. The ADV panel had been going on for 20 minutes at that point so I decided to check that out. I missed all the beginning new info from ADV as I came in during the question/answer session, but it was still interesting to listen to. Unfortunately this was cut short as I got a call from my friend whose birthday was today. She called me wondering where I was since it was her birthday and we were having a small party at our place for her. So after getting her call I just said fuck it to the rest of Anime Boston and headed on home.
And that’s the whole thing. Seems rather disappointing, doesn’t it? Well that’s cause it was. If it wasn’t for the pillows and the fact that it’s hard to know if I’d ever get another chance to see them live again the day would have been a lot more horrible most likely. All thanks to the line. All I have to say is next year I’m pre-registering, finding someone to go with me and picking up my badge on Thursday. Inifintely easier.
Wow, that was a long post.
Edit: Found a whole slide show of pictures and since I didn’t take any I’ll share these here.

There’s a really hot picture of some custom artwork of Hinata as well as a really hot Yuko cosplayer and Rikku cosplayer. Unfortunately the Tifa cosplayer I was talking about isn’t shown.
