Video Library Goes Secure with Https

Its been a while since I did an update, so heres some brief news.

My video library now supports encryption with https, to use it simply change the http to https and it will work with a nice secure connection, eg:   https://www.maikuando.tv

Why? Well some people have been worried about ISPs seeing what there doing, and in particular about them seeing people downloading anime, ie think Odex etc. Now with https, all the ISP will see is an SSL connection, and wont be able to see what your browser is requesting. All they know is the IP of the website, so they know your accessing the site, but cant see what your doing there or what your downloading.

If your using Stupid Fox 3, it will go crazy and tell you the world will end because theres been a security exception, this is because the people at Mozilla are idiots, and likely being paid by VeriSign et-al to make you think a non-signed, ie non-paid for SSL cert is not secure – this is rubbish, its still encrypted just as good as anyone else’s site, the only difference is there’s no proof who the company is, or who the site is etc. Enough on that before this becomes a rant :) But it will work, you just have to add an exception and install the cert into the browser. IE7 will give you a warning that its not signed and you just have to click continue (and this is how it should be done Mozilla!).

The library site has been very heavily loaded the past couple of months, and we had some serious memory issues – so if you were accessing the site and had the connection dropped, slow speed or couldn’t see the page that was why. I believe it is resolved for the moment after I did some tuning of the Apache config, however the server will still need upgrading soon. For those interested, we transferred over 60GB in January, and generally the traffic transfer has leveled out quite a bit compared to the 400GB a day previously. This is partly due to the memory issues preventing as many connections getting served, hopefully now the memory issue has been addressed you will be able to get a better connection. The server runs on a dedicated 100MB unmetered line, so we no longer have to worry about bandwidth overages and site suspension like back on the servage cluster days. Unfortunately the down side is that we have nowhere near the server power we had on the cluster. There are big plans in the future however, so please bear with it, and feel free to download and stream as much as you want.

Please please help us by clicking on the adverts when you visit, server rental and colocation for this kind of line is expensive and the cost comes from my pocket, I cant afford to upgrade it at the moment so it has to stay with its limited memory. This blog is hosted by Fansub.tv, but the video library is not, and thats where the cost is.
