The great thing about last.fm is that it lets the musically challenged find great bands. This is how I came across the Great Lake Swimmers, who are easily one of my favourite bands at the moment. Better yet, they’re Canadian which means I get to support my native music industry.

If one were to define their sound, the closest classification would probably be ‘folk indie’ although last.fm has them listed as ‘indie rock’. What I love about the band is their ability to invoke strong imagery with their lyrics. Hailing from Toronto, there’s also something very local and personal about the lyrical choices; for example, the chorus of the song ‘I Will Never See The Sun’ repeats the names of Toronto subway stations (“Spadina, St George, Bay and Yonge”). Incidentally, the title of this blog comes from one of the songs off their first album.

Having been an opening band for Feist, I certainly hope this band will gain popularity and go on to produce a lot more music. Their next album is tentatively scheduled for an early 2009 release. There isn’t one album I’d specifically recommend as each has songs I love. If you’re looking for a melodious, mellow band you should certainly gives these guys a try.
