According to last.fm, Namie Amuro is now my top listened-to artist (just besting American folk-indie band Wilco). Namie has been around the Japanese music scene for a long time, but it’s her newest R&B inspired stuff I really enjoy. Personally, ‘The Queen of Hip-Pop’ is still the best all around album for me, though ‘Play’ has some songs I really enjoy too. If you’re looking for something a little different, the ’60s 70s 80s’ single is good. Three popular American oldies (‘Baby Love’ by the Supremes, ‘Rock Steady’ by Aretha Franklin, and ‘What a Feeling’ by Irene Cara) were given a Namie-twist, though the original songs are still recognizable underneath.

You still hear a lot about Ayumi Hamasaki, but I prefer the beats in Namie’s songs. Not that she doesn’t have some good ballads. In fact, it’s her variety that I like the most.

music: Meg – Step August 4, 2008

Release Date: 2008.06.18

This album wasn’t something I immediately loved, but now I listen to it quite frequently. MEG is involved in Japan’s fashion and music industries, having debut in 2001 with her first album. ‘Step’ is her latest album, featuring ten tracks with a pop/electronica sound. My favourites would be ‘Prism Boy’ and ‘Heart’. Admittedly, some tracks do get on the nerves if you’re not in the right mind-set, but on the right day, the album is cute and has a good beat. It’s a surprise favourite and I would recommend you check it out.
