Final Review: Ebiten

DISCLAIMER: Anime reviews on this blog will attempt minimal to no spoilers unless otherwise noted. If a review seems dull or shallow, it’s because I’m trying to make sure not to go into too detail for those who are actually interested in the show before or after reading the review or those who have yet to finish the title. If you want further details, there are usually tons of reviews that can be found elsewhere on the internet. Furthermore, anime reviews in general are the sole opinion of the author writing it and thus differ across the users. There is no such thing as a “right answer” only a majority agreement. You are free to have your own opinions and thereby free to state and/or argue/debate in the comments section below or on the Fansub TV Forums. The review is not necessarily meant to serve as a recommendation but rather a personal opinion of having completed the series.

Ebiten is based off a manga written by SCA-ji and illustrated by the same artist as H2O ~Footprints in the Sand~ and Seitokai no Ichizon. It was webcasted on Nico Nico Douga during the Summer 2012 anime season and was streamed on CrunchyRoll in Fall 2012.

As the show is technically a season old at this point, I will try to keep the review brief. “Plot” is basically a slapstick comedy parodying many famous anime titles. Like Seitokai no Ichizon, the series is set in some school related setting (in this case the “astronomy club) and attempts to get “serious” as it approaches its conclusion only to later laugh it off. Unfortunately, despite using more mainstream titles, including Neon Genesis Evangelion, K-ON!, or Dragon Ball Z repeatedly and explicitly, it failed to really hook me like Seitokai no Ichizon did from the get go. Characters are also far less entertaining and look too similar to each other.

Animation wise, the series is clearly low budget from AIC Classic. Granted it was a webcast and that their only other work is Hourou Musuko, you would think they would have a better budget than Studio DEEN’s Seitokai no Ichizon from two years ago. Art in general is cheap. From backgrounds to character designs there is a lot lacking in detail.

Music is pretty much forgettable in this show. Seiyuus wise is decent. Kana Asumi taking the lead with Kyouko is basically another Nyaruko given all the craziness. Mariya Ise as Itsuki was also solid.

Enjoyment? None for the most part. It had a few funny moments but the jokes are often more lame than not. The episodes are mostly episodic until the final three. If anything you could even say that the last three episodes are the only ones that need to be watched.

Overall, Ebiten is basically Sora no Manimani mixed with Seitokai no Ichizon. While the former is nowhere near spectacular, it’s certainly better than what Ebiten was. Seitokai no Ichizon is definitely an easy winner over Ebiten with better comedy and a much better cast though I can’t really say the same for Seitokai no Ichizon Level 2 at the moment. Though if you prefer to have a bit of ecchi in your show, Ebiten may be one that will be a better fit than Seitokai no Ichizon
