Final Review: Arata Kangatari

Arata Kangatari is based off a manga by Yuu Watase, a mangaka famous for her shoujo works and in particular, Ceres and Fushigi Yuugi. Arata Kangatari, is an action, fantasy shounen work that follows Arata Hinohara (known as Hinohara going forward) in modern Japan who is a high school student and the primary target for bullying. After being betrayed by his only friend, he is magically swapped with the Arata of another world. In this world, humans and gods co-exist with the Hime-ou (or Princess Kikuri) keeping in check the balances and abuses of power. However, Hinohara is thrown into the world at a time where Arata is accused of murdering Kikuri. Now Hinohara must fight to survive while living on the run if he wishes to return home. Arata Kangatari premiered during the Spring 2013 anime season and was simulcasted by CrunchyRoll.

Final Review: Yuyushiki

Yuyushiki is based off a 4-koma manga that follows the daily high school life of Yui, Yuzuko, and Yukari, all of whom end up joining the Data Processing Club. The series premiered during the Spring 2013 anime season, was simulcasted by CrunchyRoll, and licensed by Sentai Filmworks.

Final Review: Aku no Hana

Aku no Hana is based on an ongoing manga of the same name. The story follows high school bookworm Takao Kasuga, whose favorite book is The Flower of Evil (Charles Baudelaire’s Les fleurs du mal). One day, he impulsively steals the gym clothes of Nanako Saeki, the girl who he considers an angel. However, Sawa Nakamura catches him and wishes to use it as blackmail unless he forms a “contract” with her. Aku no Hana premiered during the Spring 2013 anime season and is licensed by Sentai Filmworks.

Final Review: Photokano

Photokano is based off a PSP visual novel of the same name. It is considered the spiritual successor of KimiKiss and Amagami SS. Like its predecessors. The story follows Kazuya Maeda who began having an interest in photography after receiving a camera from his dad. However, he seems to have taken a particular interest in photographing girls at his school. Photokano premiered during the Spring 2013 anime season and was licensed by Sentai Filmworks.

Final Review: Date A Live Season 1

Date A Live is based on an ongoing light novel series of the same name. Set in a science fiction setting, spacequakes plague the world on an irregular basis and cause “Spirits” to appear in the world. These Spirits, while harmless, are deemed by society as threats and causes of the spacequakes and therefore hunted for extermination. Shido Itsuka, is a normal high school student who is gifted with the ability to seal these Spirits’ powers and allow them to live the life of normal humans. However, to do so he must date these girls and raise their stats in order for the relinquishment of these powers to be mutual. Date A Live premiered during the Spring 2013 anime season and was simulcasted by Funimation.

Final Review: Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru

Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru (or Oregairu for short) is based on a series of ongoing light novels. It follows Hachiman Hikigaya, a pramatic high school student who believes that the idea of youth is nothing more than a delusion. Unfortunately, his peers nor his teachers see it the same way. His attitude ultimately leads to him being forced to join the Service Club ran by the beautiful Yukino Yukinoshita, who happens to also have no friends. Thus begins the romantic comedy life of Hachiman Hikigaya. Oregairu premiered during the Spring 2013 anime season, was simulcasted by CrunchyRoll, and was licensed by Sentai Filmworks.
