Final Review: Yuyushiki

Yuyushiki is based off a 4-koma manga that follows the daily high school life of Yui, Yuzuko, and Yukari, all of whom end up joining the Data Processing Club. The series premiered during the Spring 2013 anime season, was simulcasted by CrunchyRoll, and licensed by Sentai Filmworks.

To be brief, Yuyushiki can be described as “yet another moe, comedy, slice-of-life” show. The “story” is pure slapstick comedy that results in very random discussions/topics. It’s not as if this hasn’t been done before and even if it hasn’t, the comedy is only moderately amusing because of the characters’ personalities.

Art wise, character designs seem cheap at first but fit very well with the setting of the show, though, support characters are simple pencil sketches for the most part. Background is simple and average. Occasionally there are some nice details but that is equally offset by lackluster imagery in other scenes. Kinema Citrus is the primary animation studio for the series and is still a relatively young one. Compared to their previous works, the show is more or less a cheap title but nothing was noticeably wrong. It’s overall average for them.

OP/ED are decent and catchy. Nothing overly special though. Seiyuu is composed of relatively newer ones in the industry, which brings about a nice change of pace. Background music and sound effects are also average.

Enjoyment? The comedy is great but I do recall some amusing moments. The stupidity of the characters is what makes this show a lot of fun at times. Of course, there are definitely moments where you could ask yourself, “can anyone really be this dumb?” The show’s presentation is fairly linear. Despite not having a “real plot,” there is some continuity mostly due to timeline. Of course, that’s easy to bypass in this type of show. From a recommendations standpoint, the series doesn’t really standout. It has some okay moments but not as if shows like Hidamari Sketch or the recent Yuru Yuri and Nichijou haven’t done. The classic Azumanga Daioh and popular K-ON! and Lucky Star have all done what this show has done as well in more ways than one. Not to mention with far more memorable moments. Seitokai no Ichizon is also another example.

Overall, the biggest draw back for this show is the amount of works that have come before it. For an experienced viewer, this can be a really boring watch given the repetitive formula for these type of shows. For the less active anime audience, it can be a good time waster but that time can be better spent on other titles more often than not.

Story and Character:

  • Premise (0/1): Completely unoriginal

  • Pacing: (1/1): Nothing to complain
  • Reasonable/Plausible (1.5/2): Can these characters really be this dumb at times?

  • Total: 5.5/10

Art and Animation:

  • Backgrounds (1/2): Average
  • Character Designs (1.5/2): Skimping on the support. Style fits the show

  • Visuals/Special Effects/Flashiness (0.5/2): Light and fluffy colors but not exactly what I call colorful when it’s present everywhere.
  • Art and Animation “Expectation” (1/2): For Kinema Citrus, it’s okay.
  • Total: 5/10

Sound and Music:

  • OP/ED/Insert Themes (2/3): Decent

  • Recommendation (0/2): Seitokai no Ichizon, Yuru Yuri, K-ON!, Lucky Star, Azumanga Daioh, Hidamari Sketch, etc…
  • Value (0/1): If all of the above did not exist or were not good then sure.
  • Total: 2.5/10

Preliminary Score: 5/10

Final Score: 5/10
